Literature vs Aces: which one trains your memory?
Aces is a family favourite: quick, loud and full of reversals. But how it turns out depends a lot on the hand you're dealt. Literature asks you to remember the whole table, and that's what makes it real memory practice.
The short answer
- Aces depends heavily on your deal. A hand full of high cards or awkward suits can sink you whatever you do.
- Literature has no luck after the deal. Every card can be won by asking the right player at the right time, if you remember where it is.
- Aces needs short bursts of attention. Literature needs sustained memory: facts from the first minute still matter at the end.
- Aces is every player for themselves. Literature is a team game, so you also learn to read and support your partners.
Which “Aces”?
We mean the shedding game also called Getaway, Bhabhi or Thulla (and, with a trump suit, Donkey in Kerala), started by whoever holds the Ace of Spades. Players follow suit when they can. A player who can't follow plays another suit (a “cut” or thulla), and the highest card of the suit that was led picks up the whole trick. The last player still holding cards loses.
The memory comparison
| Literature | Aces (Getaway / Bhabhi) | |
|---|---|---|
| Luck | Only the deal. After that, pure skill | The deal decides a lot: a bad hand is hard to recover |
| What you must remember | Every ask and answer, and where every card moved, across all hands | Roughly which suits others have run out of |
| How long you hold it | The whole game | A few tricks at a time |
| What forgetting costs | A wasted turn, or a wrong claim that hands the set to the other team | Occasionally getting cut |
| Reasoning | Deduction from every question at the table | Timing: when to dump high cards, when to cut |
| Teamwork | Two teams; no table talk, so you learn to read partners | None: every player for themselves |
| Pace | Thoughtful. Our app lets you set the pace and replay the game | Fast and noisy |
Why Literature is the better memory workout
Our take
Aces is a great warm-up, and plenty of families play it first. When you want a game that genuinely exercises memory, play Literature.
Our opinion. Aces rules summarised from pagat.com; names and details vary by region and family.
